Just say it is on the engine somewhere, either flywheel end or opposite to it then there is no confusion
Now... the level is low in my coolant expansion/top-up/header tank gives just as much confusion.

Take a look at these

Boxster / 996, cylinder numbering is the same, engine turned round in Boxster. I learnt this one day when I referred to the wrong cylinder number when working on a Boxster

Yes, that clearly shows that No4 bearing is at the front, and No1 cylinder is back right.

Flippin' eck! T25 oil switch (not sender) turns into 911 turbo discussion!? lol...

Anyhoo, got the blighter off, replaced both copper washers and slapped a bit of PTFE of the smaller thread just to be sure. and....

Still bloody leaking! I reckon the switch must be leaking itself from plastic bit, maybe where the spade connector is?? Off to VWHeritage tomorrow to get new one, ho hum....

Anyway, I think we all assumed that given the cheapness of the switch and the pain in replacing it you already had a new replacement one to fit. Oil switches often do leak from the plastic bit. Common problem on Saab 9-5s as well.

So new switch and copper washers and you'll be sorted. Don't bother with the PTFE, it's not rated for the temperatures on the case.

Thanks for the input. New switch fitted (like you said, 5 minute job second time!). But.....

It's still bloody leaking! Not as bad but from the same place. The oil switch is clean as a whistle so where else could it be coming from? Pic 1 shows "the drip". The drive belt pulley (crankshaft) oil seal is new and clean too so What the blithering heck? There's also now a stupidly massive leak from the nearside rocker cover too. Pic 2 shows this. It looks to be leaking from half way up the cover itself. Ok, it's surface corroded but smooth clean metal on the inside?? This is getting silly now. All I do is sort oil leaks with this thing. As soon as one is fixed then another one springs up like IMMEDIATELY! There's been an oil drip tray under it for 6 months now, embarrassing, Grr...

Rocker covers, oil sender, crank oil seal, pushrod tubes, oil switch.....

Possibly distributor seal, flat o ring seal around stem, these sometime leak and the oil dribbles down to appear to come from oil pressure switch.

I think you are going to have to give the engine a real good clean so that you can get to the source of the problem. I used brake cleaner, but I also have the Wurth pump bottle, so much cheaper on the cleaner itself, compared to aerosols.It might still be what had build up finding its way down.

You did put all the sealing washers back in the right place ?

You'll just have to replace the rocker cover gasket, standard cork, or there is a silicone version available from Germany I believe (ajsimmo knows)

OK so it's not the dizzy. Maybe just a bit of residual coming down still. Have already replaced Cork gaskets so am going to try new rocker covers. I've heard about using VW genuine ones with the "VW" stamp on them. Where do I get these? Main stealer only or does somewhere else stock them?

you need to give it a really good clean or you will never find where it's coming from, could well be a push rod tube seal.

Brake cleaner in a sparay can does a great job of removing oil as said.

Thanks for all the help - no more oil leak! Gave the oil switch a little tweak (needed a bit more than I was happy with torque wise but there you go..).
Rocker cover cork gaskets (they were new a couple months ago) replaced with Empi neoprene ones. No more rocker cover leak....
