I bought these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-Inline-F ... SwsTxXijNw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; cheap but they do the job of catching the crud and being clear you can easily see what's going on

Getting a bit off topic now, but there's a supplier of specialist fuels for garden machinery etc. https://aaoil.co.uk/brands/aspen/

Apparently it's proving to be very popular. The fuel is more expensive, but it saves on stripdowns and rebuilds from ethanol and other residues in normal fuel so works out cheaper in use. Fair disclosure, I know the owner, but then again I use V-power in my portable stuff and haven't had the issues that many do.

I have heard about this from the guy I use for machinery spares/repairs. Stihl also do a pre mixed non ethanol fuel/oil for 2-strokes, again way more expensive than pump fuel. I suppose it comes down to whether the extra cost will be worth it in the long run. A bit like the premium pump fuels VS standard ones (supermarkets excepted of course) and the mileage claims. As with most things, time will tell but I can see that larger contractors where the machinery is being used/abused all day every day would probably see a benefit in reduced downtime/repairs but I would struggle to justify the additional cost.

Long term, given that 2-stokes aren't exactly good for the environment, it may become a legal requirement to run them on this type of fuel, if they haven't been phased out altogether but I dont see a viable alternative small engine at present

Just a quick update on this post.
Since adding Wynn’s Dry Fuel initially and running for a few miles and then refilling the tank and adding Wynn’s Biocide, the van has been running really smoothly and seems to have more power.
Thanks everyone for all the help.

We lost an engine to water contaminated fuel and diesel bug, so we now have a 10 Micron Racor 500FG turbine fuel filter in place of the VW OEM unit, and we also use Marine16 biocide additive.
