Yes i have fit the filter the right way around and there is a good flow of fuel coming out after the filter. Have take the tops of the carbs and no crap in the float bowls or anywhere else i can see. Also checked fuel pipes for any leaks and nothing. RE-fit everything and the van will now idle perfectly and drive a bit but keeps losing power and juddering a lot and will eventually cut out and die completely even whilst pumping the accelerator. Starts ok again though after a few trys. Could there be crud in the fuel pump or is there anything else anyone can think of??

Have you checked the pump is actually pumping the correct amount of fuel , check if its coming out of the pipe .

Hello,

Still hovering...

Your location is in the Landes... are you on a campsite.. :?:

and can you do any work on the vehicle there... :?:

Have you got a jerrycan of petrol, and can you get a length of fuel pipe (5mm ID) :?:

Hello,

Right, let us try and diagnose without dismantling too much.. :)

and assume the problem is fuel related..

In addition to the pipe and jerry can you will also need a small funnel, some m6 bolts and a couple of petrol pipe clips.

The fuel pump is very oddly positioned ,underneath at the front of the motor, unlike all the other aircooleds..

This means that the job is a little more messy..

Done in 3 stages.

1 disconnect the feed pipe from the pump to the carbs, block it off with a 6mm bolt and fuel clip, use the little funnel and hose to fill the carb bowls from above.. at least 100 mls, dont worry about over filling because the excess goes down the return to the tank.

Now start the engine.. it should run for at least 1 minute before running dry.

If that is ok, then refill the carbs, and then put everything back in place.

2. disconnect the feed to the fuel pump under the van and block off the supply from the tank , connect the spare fuel pipe and feed it from the jerry can, placed at a reasonable height..

Now start the engine.. it should now run smoothly up and down the revs, without stopping.

if it does stop or stutter, then there is a problem with the fuel pump itself

or 3 if it runs fine then the problem is with the tank and filter.

The fuel pump... this has 2 pipes and a little flexy hose, and is held in place with (usually) 2 m8 hex head bolts, or studs and nuts or sometimes with Allen socket caps. This is a bit of a struggle to get at..if you could borrow a jack (cric) and an axle-stand (chandelle).. it will make things easier.

The pump sits on a bakelite block with a paper gasket on either side. When you get the pump off it will be gungy.. and need cleaning .

There is a bolt head on the top of the pump to remove the cover.. and reveal the filter.. probably clogged

Also check that nothing has obviously come loose in the pump.. eg the valve seats..

Reassemble and test by operating the rocker. refit to the vehicle using the old gaskets, and some jointing compound

The odd little pipe fits into a hole in the tinware.

Test using jerry can method. If all is well then connect main tank..

If not.. cutting out and fuel starvation..means there is a blockage in the tank, though not necessarily in your after tank filter..

But you have addressed that in your post.

This should get you under way. if not a new CU fuel pump is available from Serial Kombi in France.

Hello,

If the temperature stays low here (750 metres), and that storm has blown through..

Then there might be good ski-ing at 1800 metres , 90 kms away.. :)

all we will need is some nice sunshine this week end.. 8)

Hello,

Did you get blown away in the storm.. :?:

Classified as a tempest.....named Gabriel..

Now that you can take off the engine hatch without it acting the giant frizbee.. :)

Any progress.. :?: :?:

Did a tour of the ski stations, disagreeable weather, medium good snow.. 8)

We were up in the pyrenees in the middle of january, had about 1.5mtrs of snow, it was awesome :)

will let you know of any progress tomorrow.

Just on the off chance, do you know anyone who does vw repairs down this way? None the mechanics here seem keen to work on our old van!!

Cheers

Hello,

It lives...

Image

A few juicy excerpts..

"
prior to starting the list i just tried to start my camper and it took an age of starting and dying and starting and back fires before i could get it idling. Then I switched him off and started the list..."
-----------------------

Start going around all the air pipes and make sure that you have not got an air leak..

Make sure that nothing has fallen off the carbs..no vacant threaded holes, and the solenoid valves (often 3) are screwed on tight..

Do you know what distributor you have got..Hall effect (2 pipes out of vacuum capsule)..are all the leads on, including the brown one under the dizzy.. :?:
----------------------------

"
I'm pretty sure there is fuel getting to the carbs as when i managed to get it idling earlier i looked into the carb bowls and played with the throttle and there was fuel squirting into the carbs??

I have an SVDA distributor, and all the leads are on properly..."

-----------------------------

SVDA as in electronic powerspark type.. with 2 leads to the coil,..

or

SVDA as in points and condenser..1 green lead to the coil..

:?: :?:
--------------------------

"its SDVA as in points and condenser..1 green lead to the coil.."
--------------------------

Do you know how to set the points.. :?:
-------------------------

"Sorry to mess you around.......on closer inspection it is a hall effect SDVA..."

------------------------

Aha...

Much more likely..

so, petrol squirts into the carbs..you can see the petrol going pish..

you have checked all the pipes and connections..even the T shaped rubber one on the lhs.. to the brake servo..

there are no strange holes or loose bits on the carbs.

so............

Have you done any thing to the distributor or the 2 electronic widgets on the bulkhead. :?:

Are all the plug leads on properly, (1432 clockwise), feed to the coil and so on. :?:

You haven’t touched anything, and the distributor has not been moved or turned .. :?:

Have you had the timing 'done' recently :?:

----------------------------------------

"Nothing has been touched with regards to the distributor or carbs or the bulkhead for the 7 years i've had it . The only thing that we have had done is that i had the clutch replaced about a month ago because it was slipping massively. And just prior to that i had a shunt from behind by a bike that smashed my rear windscreen and dented the boot and bumper.

Timing hasn't been done in the whole time i've had it!! All seems very strange, everything seemed to be working fine until i ran out of fuel :( "

----------------------------------------

Aah..

So, someone has dropped the engine..pulling the wires off..

Followed by a shunt right where the big black electrical box is...

Are you handy with a volt meter.. :?:

Do you know how to do a continuity test.. :?:

------------------------------------

Ok,

so we can try unplugging, cleaning with electric contact spray, and replugging the lead into the distributor.

we can try taking the electrical plugs off the smaller black box and connecting them together..

Removing the distributor cap and clean the terminals and centre carbon.. clean the rotor arm, a few drops of oil down the spindle

But it looks as if this...
http://www.simonbbc.com/bundle_deals/st" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... park_plugs

and the video..

may be the way to go..
------------------------------------

"So I bought some electrical connection spray and unplugged and sprayed it on all the connections and found one wire that runs from the coil to the carb was a little shredded so repaired it. And....touch wood..... :D everything seems to be working fine now, although i have only driven it around the campsite a couple of time for about 15mins each time. Just plucking up the courage to take him out onto the open road for a proper drive "
------------------------------------

So....

It lives........ :D

How far are you from home.. :?:

Now when you feel you can get running..

get the distributor..

and either do as per the video..

or struggle over here..and I'll fit..

I am off work at the moment, and waiting for parts on other projects.

Then you can go to the ski resort..

Aircooled Bliss.. 8)
-------------------------------------

You see......NOT rocket science.... :rofl :rofl :rofl

:ok
