I found that video strangely soothing to watch, must watch some more and then maybe I'll not need to ask so many questions on here!

I can't complain about the husband comment as I'm stereotypically ignorant about the workings of the van's engine - mind you my actual husband wouldn't be too sure which end the engine is at, so no point in asking him!

So I will ask the garage to check the regulator first before replacing the alternator. That'll make me sound a bit more knowledgeable.

For how easy they are to fit and how little they cost, I would be inclined to order and fit one of these as a first resort. Put the battery on charge, leave the charger connected for 24 hours, then fit the regulator brush pack as per link (10 minute job max)

I had this problem twice.
First time the regulator had gone, it started putting in crazy voltage like 15/16V. I had to replace the alternator as it was internal regulator.

2nd time a few years after I had some welding done. I drove the van away about 1/2 mile from the garage the alternator light came on (it was probably on from the garage but I didn't notice). I took the alternator off and took it to an auto electrian who comfirmed the alternator was fine. Nothing wrong with it. However he said you have to re-activate the Alternator board as after the welding it might of upset the charging board.

He said put the alternator back on and rev it to 4500/5000 rpm and the light should go out. I did and it went out. The alternator had to be reactivated. Never heard of that before!
