When I first got it, a millimeter to the right of the light and I'd know steam would be pouring out of the van. Since the engine was sorted it's pretty much the same as yours. I thought the heating used to kick in pretty much straightaway but my memory must be playing tricks on me

Yesterday morning it was quite cold took about 10 minuites to half way.
on the way home at lunchtime when weather was warmer took only just over 5 mins.

I don't get much above 10-20mph if I'm lucky for a good while. It's always congested round here. perhaps that makes a difference?

yes there are so many factors.

I came home today after a 20+ minuite run on 40 to 50mph roads, crawled under to look for a coolant leak and the exhaust was barely hot, in summer it would burn your face off.

Tell you what IF my exhaust was effing hot. Got scabs on two of my fingers from burst blisters!

Temperature gauge stopped working altogether. Sensor is only a couple of months old.

If it were me, I would take the wires off the temp sender.
Earth the yellow/red ( if I remember correctly ) to a good point on the engine / body.

Have someone sat in the van with the ignition on.
If needle goes across to hot, it is either the sender or bad earth.

If that doesn't work, earth it at the gauge behind the dash to see if it goes full over to `hot`

It really reads like something electrical, especially as you stated earlier 1mm past the LED would have had steam coming out the engine..!!

Mine takes about 5 miles on a cold day, that's with the cab heater selected to hot. I can get the engine to warm up quicker by selecting the cab heater to cold but it's more discomfort for longer!

Thanks Gents. I cracked a rib a couple of weeks ago (dont ask) and I'm not up to dong much. Advice appreciated

Thanks Gents, I cracked a rib and haven't done much on the van for a few weeks as I haven't been able to drive it. Today I tested the temperature sender by removing relay 43 as per the wiki and connecting those two points. The temperature needle went all the way across. Does that mean the sender's faulty?

I couldn't find the WIKI link you refer to.
If you shorted the Red/Yellow to earth at the temp sender, and the needle went across to the Hot end of the scale, then that leaves 2 possible options....

1. Temp sender faulty.
2. Poor earth to point under coil ( I think it's there. )

Try ensuring you have good continuity on brown wire to earth on the temp sender connector by just shorting the brown and red/yellow together.
If I am not mistaken, all the sender does is decrease resistance to earth as it find the coolant temp rise. That change in resistance makes needle move.

So, if you have a poor earth then it is giving a higher resistance to earth through the sender, and as such your needle won't go across the scale as much.

Am I making sense? Apologies if not....

Spent the last couple of days sorting the mess up I made when shorting the wrong ports Will get on to sorting the sender tomorrow

In the end it turned out that the live wire had come adrift in the connection box in the engine bay. I suppose as it was coming loose the gauge still worked slowly and finally stopped when the wire came off. It took 9 minutes to get halfway today. What a palaver for such a small thing
Now to try and sort that rear and side lights
