Emma&A1 just going back to the damaged on the van caused when it was at the the garage it was their responsibility to look after your van when they had it in their possession I would go back to the garage and complain and get them to pay for the damage that was caused to the van. That happened to my mates car at Halfords and they sorted it out for free because It was there responsibility to look after it.

As above. Your garage will have their own insurance who should pay out for the damage from the collision, whether it is caused by the garage themselves or another customer.

Thanks for the messages - sorry its taken a while to get back, have just had major surgery! Means I can't drive for 5 weeks anyway... :(
So the van is sitting outside my house.
So, the garage uses a public car park which is a 10 minute walk from their garage, to store some of their customers cars. Its open to the public 24 hours a day and is pay and display.. is this legal? It just seems madness to me to..would the council let them do this? They don't have a pay and display ticket on their customers cars, at least mine didnt and it must have been sitting there for around 10 days.

Ask the council, they may have an agreement, anyway it's irrelevant because theg have a duty of care and they should be covered for damage while in their care, they must have driven it to the carpark so they must be covered for it.
Worth asking for thier insurance details and try to claim, you may find it easier to claim off your insurance and get your insurance company to fight theirs.

I would phone the garage first just to see what they say if no joy then ask them for there insurance details.Try and stay away from the insurance if you can because you will be paying on a higher insurance till it gets sorted but don't let them get away with it and get well soon

Look at your usage. Depending on how much you actually use it and what it costs, you might be better off selling it and a locating a budget to rent one for one or two trips a year and for that to still work out cheaper

Thanks everyone :) So Im still undecided as to what to do with the van.

My thoughts right now are to get it to a garage, source and engine and get them to fit it, but again I am trying to weigh up the costs.

Im in danger now of sounding completely uneducated about vehicles  if I had another engine put in...what actually constitutes the engine. Ive always been a bit confused about this! Does it include the starter motor? Alternator? for example...

Please don't shoot me down!!

an engine has no ancilaries like starter motor, alternator, distributor, carb or injection system, water pump, water pipes, clutch, exhaust pipes, fuel pump... etc

if you buy second hand it may have some parts but recon will have nothing.

recon may not have a flywheel either.

all these parts get swapped from your existing engine if they are not broken on removal

engine is the bit attached to the winch

all this lot gets swapped over
