Well I bit the bullet and removed the tank. I still had to juggle the pipes to get them out, even after cutting them in half. Glad I took the tank out cos I found some dodgy fuel lines. Tank looks good though. Just need to find the link for the fuel line replacement kit

Might be worth getting some waxoyl & spraying around the area where the tank goes. Also make sure you don't trap the accelerator cable when putting the tank back in

Thanks. I found it. Ordered! Waxoyl at the ready and thanks for tip re trapping/not trapping cable.

Sorry, didn't acknowledge your reply Jeff, and for that I apologise. Thanks for the suggestion of replacing the hoses at the same time. Mine are in good condition, apart from a slight mark where I was careless with the hacksaw. Might still replace them though as the tank is out. Luckily all of the metal pipes (clutch and brakes) are in good condition.

Out of interest, did you try it without removing the tank Meggles, or did you dive straight in with the tank removal?

I'm curious as you had the smaller diameter pipes than me...

I sat and thought, then thought again! Then I thought a bit more. As I couldn't possibly know the condition of anything above the tank, incl tank itself, I decided to take the tank out, so that I could check everything. and the weather forecast was half decent too so no time to waste! tbh, now that I've done the job with the 2 piece pipes I reckon it would be much easier to do it with tank in situ, though I couldn't have checked everything. I'd certainly recommend having an assistant though!!
Incidentally, one of the front to rear rubber hoses is larger at one end so I had use the end of the old hose and use a jointing piece. This will be changed for a new piece of hose and proper jointing piece asap. I also need to get some of the canvas covered hose for where the breather pipes join the expansion tanks in the wheel arches. next job is to replace the petrol feed and return pipes. I have the kit here, just neeed to get on with it

Yes, I did the fuel return and feed lines at the same time too and radiator, and carb and half the coolant hoses..!!

Agree on an assistant - I did it on my own with no ramps which made that tank bit of a chuffing task and a half..!!
It was wet, cold, and I spent half my time wondering where I went wrong in life

Funnily enough, now you mention it, one of my rubber hoses from stainless pipes to the radiator ( the one with the right angle that joins underneath the radiator, not to the front of it ) seemed a few CM too short as well.

I had bought a replacement as the old one seemed brittle.
I just had to wriggle a bit of length back from the middle joint section to gain an inch. I had forgotten about that until you mentioned your issue.

Meggles, just be careful you don't foul the "cross over breather pipe" when fitting, easy to do unless tank is dropped.
VW Franchise in Blackpool replaced mine, removed tank straps and someone supported tank which was stupid, as only discovered sometime afterwards the "cross over pipe" had sheared on near side. Handbrake cable fouled on O/S.
I ended up dropping tank myself, replacing pipe and waxoiling everything around it . Did it on the drive on my own,which at my age I'm quite chuffed with. Just took ages for my back to straighten, several Cumberland Ales helped!
