My old DG had a VW recon stamp on it where the engine number should be, and official looking stickers on the rocker covers stating non-hydraulic tappets fitted.
Whether this means VW themselves fitted solid, or someone else down the line fitted them, I have no idea.

What are the pro's and cons of hydraulic / solid set ups?

Hydraulic:
Pros - quieter, low maintenance, pretty much self-adjusting once preset.
Cons - don't like high revs or extreme grind cams so not liked by boy racers.
Solids:
Pros - err...don't need bleeding before you fit them.
Cons - pretty much everything else.

The question was just to learn and because Hydraulic cams are going to run out soo.

start it and it rattles bad but soon they pump up.
I have done it.
Also if hydeaulic tappet is 4mm of morememt, cam is 8mm approx valves will always open.

Well the KS BW ones seem to need it. I meant from new, not used and sat in an engine. I wonder if they are just filled with a light oil for transport and need refilling with correct grade, because the last set I fitted new rattled like hell and I took them out again. BW replaced one under warranty (bent oiling disc). So I think it pays to strip, clean, check, refill with 15w40 and assemble prior to fitting.

Did it actually say that, or was it this sticker...
If so, it means no clearance adjustment necessary, as they're hydraulic.

Perhaps a Type 4 engine as it's air-cooled with hydraulics. Was CV in a late bay the first boxer with hydros as standard? Don't know, just guessing, as I don't do bays.
Or maybe a CT?
