after getting the alignment checked/set 'properly' and even more head scratching! problem solved. n/s wishbone is a 'pattern' part not the vw original (compared mine to another van) and is slightly longer past the balljoint towards the wheel/tyre. a few sharp smacks with a hammer to dress the nose/edge over and all ok now. not the most technical solution but it's better than removing metal
