Hello,

More progress..

The whole inlet and exhaust system is now offered up and sealed with exhaust compound..

Image

Image

Image

Those heat risers..

Image

Now I can fit the rhs inner tin..2 screws on outside only for the moment..

Image

and the lhs just fits into place..

Image

a final coat of 'make shiny paint'.... 8)

Image

HEAVY ENGINE PORN ALERT

The squeamish may look away.. as we are going to talk...

Wongly engine flaps.......

These hideous devices are all part of the cold starting assist system..

powered by a thermostatic bellows, cable, pulley and big spring..

In the beetle and cal days we would lock open the slots and remove the bellows..

why.. because they had a nasty habit of jamming in the cold position..

even worse on CT,s and Type 4 (2 litre blocks)..

However the left hand flap (oil cooler side does divide the air.. partly to the cylinders, and partly to the oil cooler..

Image

So I'm going to fit this, fixed as a deflector.. I had noticed that the oil cooler entrance was a bit blocked by debris..

Drill, bolt and lock in place on the RHS tin..

Image

Image

This has the advantage that I can now secure the dipstick tube..

Image

Now I silicone mastic the turbine to the top tins..

Image

Making every thing air tight.

I've glued the HT lead clips onto the tinware..

Let cure and dry...

Work tomorrow....

Cordialement,

:ok

Hello,

It has been the best part of a month since my last posting......

I have been busy in the preparing of 3 land/range rovers for a 'rally raid'..

Image

Image

Image

Any way.. enough of all this raw horsepower foolishness...

and we return to our 30KW motor....

so turbine clean and marked with timing notch, and a different looking one at 180 degrees..

Image

Installed on the crank, lined up at TDC..

Image

I can now fit the starting assembly..bellhousing and starter..(thanks Aidan.. all those years ago.. )

Image

Image

and bolt up the frame..

the spark plugs are copper greased, ready for fitting..

Image

I then crank the motor over to get oil pressure..

Now I re adjust the hydraulic tappets contact plus 1/2 a turn..

Image

As we shall be on and off with the rocker box covers, I will show you my special tool..

Image

So, initial start up, with 'as set' carb and dizzy, re using the old oil and filter and rocker cover gaskets..

Image

I let it run for 20 mins, and set the tappets again at 1 turn. A gentle 'tweak' on all the exhaust nuts and so on..

Tomorrow I will overhaul the carb, finish the tinware and trim, and tune the motor and carb emissions..

Cordialement,

:ok

Been thinking of digging a pit for years, I wonder how much use it is vs the effort of digging it?

I helped my old man dig one, barely effort at all, however, keeping it dry was a different story. Ended up digging a soak away deeper than the pit, no more problems after that.

Hello,

The pictures do not tell the whole story..... :)

Like all the 'Auvergnat' barns here, there are 2 floors...

Downstairs, accessed by cow sized double doors, stone floored, has an adjustable height nacelle ..

So the vehicles sit on 3" oak floor, with the 'fosse' access at the front..

Adjustable so we can maintain farm machines.. biggest tractor Fendt 810..

Round the roof beams is a 1950's monorail to store and manipulate hay bails..

handy when you have a gearbox in a sling and need to move it 10 metres to the next vehicle.. 8)

Oh and to keep it warm in Winter.. simply install 12 cows downstairs ..

Shower, breakfast,....then get out Solex spares box..

Hello,

Today was mild but windy, so good for engine tuning in the barn.. :)

Image

First the carb has to be rebuilt..

Here is the stripped body..

Image

The main jet and the emulsion tube go in the acidic ultrasonic wash..

Image

Re installing the main jet..

Image

Here is where you have to have 0.8 mm clearance between the venturi wall and the butterfly

Image

for the warm idle.. but I find that I do it again later from above with a thin wire..

When you DRY mount the carb, use decent gaskets, ordered separately..:

Image

I seem to have run out of photos here...

But I can fill in gaps later..

I made up a small screwdriver to adjust the CO screw, and went round the carb several times, until I get a smooth idle, with

the CO screw opened out enough 4turns, and the main idle screw at 4-5.

The trick is to use 0.8 mig welding wire as a feeler gauge to reset the hot idle..

at 850 rpm, I am just pulling vacuum on the gauge, and here is the CO reading:

Image

Now I'm going to prepare another carb as a 'pre set' spare..

Cordialement,

Evening John, can't see on the picture, what was co level?

good question, looks like 4%
My gunson meter is in % the manual says 2% is in fresh air but my dad who is a chemist says 2% would be deadly :?:

Hello,

george2490 wrote:Evening John, can't see on the picture, what was co level?

Sorry, must be getting fuzzy as I get older... :)

Just under 0.4,

I'm more concerned that the mixture stays constant 13.4 to 1 through the rev range..

Remember, there is no alternator on as yet, so there is less load at fast tickover.

Nor any air cleaner..

The motor feels sweet, and we will see how much further adjusting is required after ,say, 500 km.

Thanks, asking because after my top end rebuild I am stuck round 3.5 and thought I had problems even though it's running sweet and strong. Getting round 23 to the gallon.

No problem,... if you are running the full CT setup, ie aircleaner with control valves all working, all the plumbing on the carb, including the
Pathetic Plastic Plunger, and the dreaded Hall effect ignition and amp at 5 ATDC..

Then 0.35 at 850 rpm is very good... :)

What grade fuel do you use, does it contain ethanol. :?:

Do you have a reading for ,say, 2500 rpm. and/or a lean/rich fuel mixture value. :?:

I am using 98 RON petrol, no ethanol, and I have raised the compression..

I can tweek the CO down a bit more later, but these motors run (IMHO) just that bit better if they run slightly rich at higher rpm and under load.

When I re shoot the photos you will see that I am setting up this standard carb,

but stripped of all damping and idle devices...goes with the P+C dizzy....

Waiting for the postman, then HI..Ho..

Morning, standard carb and intake, standard supermarket unleaded fuel. Aftermarket svda sissy with points and blue Bosch coil. Timing set up static about 8 degrees.
Fitted 1641 barrel and pistons with beetle heads.
I used a gunson color tune and gas tester to get it running.
I haven't tried to change the settings beyond those at idle because I have twin solex kit to fit when I have run it in a bit.

Hello,

A few snatched moments in the evening..

The alternator is cleaned, all the terminals shiny , and a new drive belt fitted..

Image

I am most pleased with my new engine seal...1/2 the price.. fits very well.. :)

Image

I have prepared and tuned 1 carb, and have built another still to be tested on the motor.

For the carb rebuild and tuning details, I'm going to do a video..a good demo is worth a thousand words..

Install at the week end....hopefully..

Hello,

So the engine install went without problems:

Image

As I have removed all the gadgets on the carb.. the aircleaner is just that..no vacuum flaps or thermo valves..

Image

Image

For the fine tuning of the CO screw you will need to make/modify a screwdriver like this..

Image

Now I set up my 1980's analogue gauges..

Image

Image

and tune till I'm happy... :)

(there will be a video)..

Then a clear up and a quick spin to a nice relaxey spot..

Image

A checkover, then the drop down into the valley and then the long climb to the Puy..908 metres.. at sunset..

Image

The performance is improved and the carb much more 'willing'..

Oil is cool and no leaks..

Aircooled bliss.... 8)

Hello,

Well, after a good run around..

its into the pits..

Image

General check over, oil and filter change..

There was a drip of oil from around the front of the oil cooler.. :(

but none in the turbine housing.. :)

nor any oily smells.... :D

So I'm off locally this week end..

then a long motorway haul at Xmas..

I'll report back on the fuel consumption..

Please feel free to reply, comment or ask questions...

..Don't worry Aircooled fans..

There is another project on the starting blocks..

CT block and a mysterious parcel from abroad...(thanks Paul).. :ok
