Well it's not working as it should if it doesn't kill the engine.

Have you checked it opens and closes fully with ignition on off.

I have found that on older engines a slight misfire, air leak or oil burn will wipe out the colour and it just produces an orange flame, which is useless.
A gas analyser is easily available at any good garage.
I use my local motter to faff with the mixture, I just bung him a drink for the time on the machine.
