Eureka. Found thread. Lot of pages as it was the initial exploration of this subject but it covers much.

Bricky also stocks the bezels which are the right way to fit them but do cost about the same as the headlights, however I presume they have to be shipped in etc. The bezel has to be 7" with equally spaced screw holes to line up, something you don't get on most Brit cars like minis, moggis, Land Rover etc which are offset screw holes.

T25 headlight frames were clearly dual use - ie for both US and European markets. Most people don't notice. I used Brit bezels (Land Rover ones) as I wanted stainless but they did require zip ties to hold them secure. You can't see ties once they're on though.

You could also (although I didn't like the look) use 7" stoneguards and zip those on - about £11 a pair

Given technology constantly develops, anyone used the square lamp upgrade from Campervan Culture.com ? Be interested in feedback?

Here's a few suggestions of thing to check/sort:

Dirt or damage on front glass lens, absorbing light or changing the beam
Damage to the silvered reflector
Corrosion on 3-pin plug causing excess resistance (best fix is to replace the terminals or the whole plug)
Excess resistance (due to wear/tarnishing) on the headlight switch or the dipper switch
Excess resistance at the earthing point on the A-pillar
Substandard bulbs

Fixing all the above should get the light working to factory spec, which for VW was good enough, and is for most owners too. However if you still want a bit more light, I would suggest adding two relays, one for dipped beam and one for high beam, between the dipper switch and the relay plate.

If you're considering fitting new lights, I would urge you to avoid illegal chinese Ebay tat, and fit E-coded lights from a reputable manufacturer, eg. Hella.

I upgraded my feed to the Dash, following CovKids advice. It was in expensive and easy and made a big difference. I agree with the above from Syncroandy. And whilst replacing my light units tackled all th above. I only had done this over the course of a couple of weeks. Only because of lack of time and parts. Whilst the above are valid (I haven't cleaned my earth crown yet) the upgraded feed with relays made the largest difference. The modern light units with standard 60w bulbs also helped hugely.

I can recommend powerfuluk. I'm happy with my light units. I made. Clip to hold them. I hadn't realised BW sold bezels!
