Thanks all, only just read all of the comments.
I can confirm that I did a journey of around 50 minutes constant yesterday and the light didn't even flicker. My stepdad commented on how much quieter the engine sounded....
I'll be looking into it a bit further on my next day off work! And ill report back.

Still get the pressure checked though. The light shouldn't come on whether you use 10/40 or 15/40.

A quick update to this post, for those interested.
I've not had to replace any oil yet since I had this done.
I drove 8 hours from Hastings to Devon last week, in very, very heavy traffic - no sign of the red oil pressure light at all. Van sat and drove through it all.
Then another similar 7 hour drive 2 days later. Again, no problems.
Not sure what that tells me, but at least its better!

...I still need to get the oil pressure checked... I know, I feel really bad about not getting around to having this done. Very, very soon

I got my garage to check the cylinder pressure too (aka compression test). Just for peace of mind.
Fortunately all ok.

Said this before, but the best oil I've found both on price and on performance (inc shutting up tappet noise) is the one sold by LIDL. I buy two a year - £12 each. :D I use the one on the left. If you read the back it meets all the VW specs.

After I rebuilt my engine,(2ltr CU) I was recommended by an engine builder to use 20/50 valvoline race oil which I used for about 5000 miles. I have since tried using 15/40 as 20/50 seemed a bit thick for tight oil clearances.

It's only thick when it's cold
