Ahhh! OK...so the veins in the rad could be partially blocked.

Indeed...a radiator working at 50% so the flowing coolant is heating up more quickly....can I just ask you what the needle is doing at the point at which the fan comes on? This is one of those occasions where I would love to see what its doing for myself, feel the heat in the pipes going to and coming from the radiator, the point at which the thermostat is opening..etc.

FYI WBX rad and flow direction

Just above the LED. Quite normal. Going to change it Tuesday and will test it when it's off. Poor in hot water and see if it's cold anywhere. It's got a new thermo stat so know it's not that. Still might just be me being over worried and it's been a few weeks since I've thrown any money at it so here we go. Off to the new forest this weekend if your close? For a pat butchers?

So radiator is changed. They said it was very heavy when they took it out. I think good choice to change. Haven't been far yet but do have a little more confidence with it. Traffic will tell I suppose!

Just thinking, I think the fan fuse has blown after changing the rad (need to look into it) any thoughts why? Was working fine now it's not coming on. Check the fuses and one has blown. Will change tomorrow and try but just thinking why? Pos fan has stuck? Any ideas before I get balls deep?

Take the plug off the fan switch and short across the terminals in the lead . It should run, if it is a two speed, short across the other terminal and it should be faster or slower. Then you will know if the fuse is ok. If the fan runs it is!!! And then you know either the new rad is doing it's job and the fan doesn't need to run or the thermo switch is knackered. If the fan does not come on by the time the gauge is over 3/4 knock the engine off and get a new thermo switch!!!

On my new 2.1 the fan comes on about 3mm over the LED and at speed one can just about stop the temperature rising, it can just about bring it down a fraction. (But my Rad is old and has seen better days). Mine will get hot as soon as the airflow stops (I stop and tick over), worse in stop start traffic. I have a chicken switch on the dash that turns my fan one speed one which I flick when in a traffic queue rather than waiting for the gauge to hit 2/3. One day I will fit a new rad but that will mean taking the gas tank out which I am not looking forward to!!!
