The needle valve is the same as in the refurb kit but the tail does look different from your diagram. I don't fancy trying to seal the float. I've seen a replacement online for 40 euros and will see if I can get one second hand. Thanks for all the advice both of you and to a decent mechanic from the AA. I would never have tackled the carb without your help

I reckon this is going to sort the switch over problems I've had for a couple of years

The one on the left is my old cracked float. The needle valve was pushed through the gap and slipped back to slot in.

The float on the right is the new one. I take is that this suits the other type of needle valve with the wire as the hole is too narrow to push the circular cap of a needle valve through . Can anyone tell me how I attach the wire to to the float does it just hook on? Thinking about it I was wondering if the tail of the wire is just straightened and pushed through the hole to guide the valve in??

any ideas?

is that from your origional carb or the kit?

Its confusing. Mine is an early carb. This is an early needle valve. This replacement float has a smaller aperture which can't accept the other style of needle float (both types were in the box) so it has to be the one with the wire but I can't work out how to attach the wire to the float

I've not seen one of these, but I'd guess that the wired end of the valve simply sits in the recess/hole in the float arm, and the wire then wraps around the arm to hold it roughly in place. It's difficult to see for sure, but it looks like there's evidence of a 'nick' along the top edge of the arm, just next to the hole - would that be where the wire wraps round?

It doesn't need to be rigidly fixed to the float because the upward pressure of the float will keep it located. And the wire doesn't need to be tight so as to pull the needle down, because the fuel pressure will push it open.

I agree looks like the wire would spring out around the side
can you take some better ( bigger) pics please and one of it assembled when you get there for future people with this float and needle valve

The arm is too thick for the spring to clip over and there isn't a notch. I've stretched the wire and hooked it over the ledge coat hanger style but I'm not convinced. I'm going to hunt out the other kind. Steve is going to have a look and I have found a supplier online if push comes to shove

I took the carb off to look for a missing washer. When I put it back together again the engine fires up but instantly dies when I take my foot off the accelerator. I'm assuming its an air leak. The only thing I changed was the bottom gasket which I put between the manifold and the mount.That is right isn't it?

Took carb off yet again. Gasket had a piece missing. I must have put an old one in, heaven knows what happened to my new one. Should have learnt my lesson not to work on my van after a 14 hour day in twilight.
