You did put the thermostat in the right way round, and tested it before installation?

Time to test it if you didn't.

Well, I've had the thermostat out again and tested it, and yes it wasn't opening properly! Learnt a valuable lesson here - check that even new items work before fitting lol! Thank you for all your ideas and advice
