I can remember when I suspected my roof was a little rotten, I too tried to inspect it before removing the roof. Trust me, you only see the full extent of the rust once you've taken the roof off. See the pictures I posted when I did this a while ago

I'm sure your new welding skills will be put to good use!
One thing I wish I'd done when I did my roof was to obtain a good roof cut from another van. It would have made the task a lot easier than the way I did it.

That's my route too. Started an evening course a couple of weeks ago, runs 10 weeks, and the instructor is happy for to spend the whole 10 weeks learning/practising MIG, rather than following his MMA/TIG/MIG class plan. Never done any welding before, but with shocking rear quarters, loooong hole behind the fridge, holes in the floor beneath rear windows + rusty rear arch seams, and on and on, not to mention a suspicious red/brown line round the join of my hitop, I'm going to have to find a way to buy a MIG welder. Roof off it will squeeze into my garage, but might have to remove the garage door to get it in
Not able to attend next week, and college closed week after, but then instructor happy for me to try vertical panels and upside down.
Hope your course works out as flexible, Good luck with it all!
