Yeah but there not that hard to build really , and I know the VW crowd is willing to spend just as much on there vans as the Subaru peeps do so thought someone might of done a couple by now

Since when was a wide-ratio 4-speed transmission ever superior to a close(r) ratio 5-speed?
My 2.6 SA put out 200Nm when it was new, thats ~147 lb.ft and the 5 speed (read as AAP) had approx 180,000km before I had it reconned. It wasnt too bad at all iirc, nothing broken although it may have had some maintenance beforehand. It used to tow a cara van and a boat from Harare to Capetown so it never got an easy life!
What does the 3.0 H6 make torque-wise?

You need to do some research on the gearbox for high powered subaru installations ! Its common knowledge that the DK code 6 rib Aircooled box is a tough one. And why would you need an awkward dogleg first into second gear situation when all that torque is available. For the lower powered subaru engines the 4 speed box that was mated to the wbx engine is strong enough as long as its in good condition.

It's all relative I suppose. I am putting my faith in the UN1, the internals are on a different scale to the VW 091 stuff and it's known to be good for big hp.
From Wikip:

Torque: 289 N·m (29 kg·m; 213 lb·ft) at 4400 rpm

2000–2002 Subaru Outback H6
2000–2002 Subaru Legacy GT30

But the hassle to fit that big renault box ! Ive seen a few for sale from people who have thought it was a good idea, then after buying one realised how much work is involved . The EG33 i have puts out about 230 torque and its going through a high mileage DK box 4 speed. I can start off in second gear and change up to fourth without much gas and its a tall last gear.

Isn't there a company in Australia that do kits to put the gears out of a Subaru box into the VW box. I looked at them once but can't remember the name. They were selling bolt In boxes for $2500 I think. No cheap but would transform the van I think.

Well I have a 2.0 ej in my Caravelle bang on 4 speed box du code I think, moreythan enough power, towss a 2 berth caravan easy, don't forget these vans are not designed for speed , yes a 2.5 would be nice but the 2.0 is more available and in my opinion more than enough reasonable on fuel as well about 27 knocking about and well into the high 30s on a run

Thanks for taking the time to share the info guys. It's been a busy day at work and tapatalk wasn't working so I haven't been able to reply. I'll do a little more reading over the weekend, it looks like an EJ20 could be an option if the right one comes along. For now I think I'll try and find the newest low mile engine and see what turns up.
Cheers

You don't want one to new as I think it gets difficult with all the electrical crap on the car. Think your best option is up to early 2000s. Although I could be wrong! Rjes website tells you the best donor car to get hold of.

Oops, I meant up-to 2001. Fingers crossed I may be the owner of a 2.5 Legacy quite soon.

Nick Tune is the guy to contact regarding sourcing a Subaru engine, he will also modify the loom for you.. I paid £750 for my 2.5 quad cam ( chocolate engine

!! ) from him 18 months ago. It arrived on a crate, along with the loom ( I didn't have the time, inclination or space to strip a donor car myself) I obviously changed the cambelt and all bearings along with a couple of other parts.. I read all about the head gasket issues, but took the view that in reality these engines are easy to work on and fairly cheap to buy, so if it did develope a problem later on I would address it then. It's done approx 3000 miles so far, with no issues, just lots of smiles... The power really does make the bus into a completely different vehicle. I'm running a AGT 5 speed box with 16 inch wheels, 225/55/16 rears, which is 3800rpm at 70 mph, ideally I would love to drop that down a few thousand rpm, but it still gives around 26 mpg on a decent run ( hight top Westfalia) .
I have also upgraded the front brakes to drilled/grooved discs and matched pads.. This really helps, the extra bite and heat disapation is very reassuring.
It's not a cheap conversation, done well it looks almost factory... I have no regrets doing mine.
Good luck.

Thanks. I wanted to get my engine from Nick Tune but he said he doesn't get many EJ25's at the moment.
This car just kind of happened by accident yesterday. I was looking on eBay and sent a message to the seller about picking it up next weekend. He was on the way home from Birmingham to Lymington and dropped it off.
I wasn't really planning on stripping a car as I don't have a driveway or garage space and didn't want any hassle of my neighbours in our communal car park. But they can deal with it now!

Good to see you got a doner, I bought a 2.0 NA 2000 legacy for not a lot of £. At least buying the car complete, you can run it and see that the engine is fine to start with .
Just started stripping mine and camper will be taken off the road at the end of this month .

Good luck with it. I'm calling RJES tomorrow to order the conversion parts. Hope to get this done as quickly as possible so I don't lose too much camping time this year.
Famous last words.
