Which bolts?
Wheel bolts or the CV cap head screws?

OK so I think the problem is the left hand side. After jacking up I got underneath and founf there was marginal play in the shaft. I then tried wobbled the joint itself and its loose. I was able to wobble it back and forth. I assume this shouldnt be like that?
My concern is that whatever the joint is screwed to may also be loose too? is that possible?
As you can see by the photos the old joint, although lubricated, was full of sludge.

I decided to screw the new joint just to test the moment against the box. There is still some play there. With the rear tyres jacked and the handbrake off if I try and turn the RHS joint there is little to know movement, when doing the same on the left I seem to a lot more play. I loathed to change all the CV joints without getting to the bottom of this. Is this dort of moment to be expected?
Hope you can advice.

If the flange on the transmission has side play (they can do) then the job gets a lot more expensive.
The flange is supported only the diff side splines, once these wear its really a pro job and a better condition diff required and then it all needs setting up for backlash and gear meshing.

And this would cause the knocking noise?

Recondition all the CV joints. Cleaned off and greased. Noise now gone. Thanks for help.

Hi there, glad you got it sorted
When you say "reconditioned" all the CV joints, did you replace them with new ones, or what ? (just curious)

Valid question as a clean and repack will only be a temporary cure - perhaps a few months, sometimes a bit longer. If they're worn, they're worn and you end up doing the same gritty, grimey job all over again.

Well the joints were so dry I decided after cleaning them off that it was worth regressing them and changing boots. If it doesnt last then fine, I buy new and change. Didn't take too long. I'll wait and see.
