One of those relays some folk fit to get a full battery kick to the solenoid (not necessary in my humble opinion).

Well...it worked on my 68 van,the solinoid was just making contact( when cold ) my guess is that when the engine (and starter motor)is hot the solinoid contacts are moved apart a bit.The relay helps to pull the solinoid in the last little bit,Plus poor wiring and ignition switch are compensated for by the relay.
