Yep, I was guilty of that, especially regarding solar panels. This is one reason why I downgraded to a simple 4 bar LED "battery condition" thingy

Very wise. Forum is already full of proclaimations on 'how many amps' on solar. Can become an obcession akin to those that invest heavily in 'high-end' stereos who then go on and on about frequency response at any opportunity - and completely forget to just damned well listen to the music.

Worth sticking you meter in line with the feed to the meter(s) and see how much power they consume. I have one here (green led type) that uses more than you would expect (it's not in the van). Mind you, I am guessing you will only be switching them on when you wish to make a mental note of state of charge, so battery drain when parked up won't be an issue then.

In a home made box with a lead and a ciggy lighter plug on the other end

I fitted mine where the "posh" vans have their hand-brake warning light. I know it's not Fluke meter accurate but if it ever gets below 12V I know I've got a problem

I bought and installed this in my van. Installed in the rear, to enable the kids tablets to charge (primarily), run a portabe DVD player on journeys but also has a voltmeter. I generally only use it when the van is running, but I can keep an eye if we are using whilst stopped (I don't have a leisure battery!!)

That way I'll have 2 volt meters, one for each circuit..
