Should I use any sealant now?

When refitting windscreens do you trap the headling fabric inside the seal? If so, how much - I have to fit a new headlining...?

Also did you use any sealants because last week driving in awful weather and very strong headwinds, the water was getting in above the rubber seal (genuine VW I believe)

There is so much in the forum on windscreen removal/fitting (and WIKI). Do use the search feature - 'windscreen' will be enough. Been asked many times.

Yeah i did search but some say use sealant others say not necessary - i guess its not strictly necessary but i think i'll put some in anyway as i dont want those puddles on the cab floor coming back...

I have some stuff called arbomast autograde. Got it on ebay a few years ago. Never sets.

I think its me that advocates sealant and for good reasons. Purists will argue that VW didn't use sealant and it therefore shouldn't be required. That would be ok (at least for the first 20 years possibly) but in practice they can and do leak resulting in corner rot. Personally I'd rather know I had a watertight seal this time around than have to revisit what is a horrendous job to sort out anyway. As mentioned before, I used B&Q roofing mastic (cheap) in a tube that goes in a gun. You don't need much and it stays tacky rather than drying out.

I've worked on v-dubs for well over 30 years now and when it comes to windscreens I only fit good quality seals and finish off with sealant. I don't think theres any way (excuse the pun) to cut corners without it biting back later. After all, presumably its the last time the job will be done - might as well make a good job of it.

Someone (I think maxandcaddy) advocated using a thin bead of non-setting sealant compound, I assumed inside the seal.
I suppose putting it in before fitting the seal to the van would be horribly messy and likely to interfere with the way the seal sits?

A new plastic nozzle on a sealant tube is small enough to ease between the seal and bodywork , you can then move it around the aperture gently squeezing the seslant as you go then just wipe up sny that escapes .

Spot on. Then only needs white spirit on a lint-free cloth to remove any excess. You should only do this when area beneath seal is perfectly dry. If its wet, you're wasting your time.
