change the starter bush soak it in oil over night its here on wiki under engine faults done mine 100 times better now

The shaft feels loose because the bush it locates into remains in the bellhousing when the starter motor is removed, a warn bush can cause a slow starter so worth changing - see wiki.

I have ordered two bushes ( one for spare - they were cheaper than the postage, so thought I might as well get two. )
Now, I'm concerned trying to get that out might mean I `drop` it into the gap underneath, and `lose` it.

I thought I would push a rag around the gap to stop this, but wondered how hard it is to get that bush out?

I can only see it using my phone camera..!!

E D I T: Forget that - I have ran my fingers inside and there no gap for the bush to fall through. Still struggling to get it out though..!!

Rawlbolt - some have had success with one.

Got mine out with a tap. Can't remember the size but make sure it's only big enough to cut into the bush and you get it square to avoid any damage. Keep turning it will slowly drive out.

Also, when you've done that, make sure (as Itchy said) you get some fuel down carb throat prior to cranking. It may take a few attempts - running for a few seconds then stops etc. The pump can't pump fast enough if engine doesn't at least fire in short bursts at which point the pump should start catching up and fetch the fuel through. Its a long way from tank to engine.

I thought I would pop on and advise that I have finally sorted this issue..!!
After starting with cleaning connections, changing bushes and battery and still having the same issue, I ordered a `High Torque` starter motor from Go Westy - seemed a little pricey to me at first but I wanted something of quality build so was willing to wait for the import, and now it's fitted I am well chuffed..!!

Jed at CampervanCulture imported the starter for me, and ensured quick delivery when it arrived through customs - top man, friendly and helpful.

This is a special thanks to Jed, Itchyfeet, CovKid and all those others here that had some input into helping sort this out for me.

Very appreciated chaps, I was determined not to put it in the garage, and am glad that I didn't.
Installed the starter today, poured some fuel in the carb as suggested in this thread by a few people, and after 3 or 4 attempts, the old van is running lovely now.

I have to say that the starter seems to be worth it's weight in gold at this point.
It turns over like a car - no sluggishness - and best of all, no bush required..!!
