In the general run of things, most common spares are cheaper than those on modern cars where you can pay as much as £300 even for a headlight unit. The value of your vehicle goes up whereas everyone elses goes down. Insurance is cheap too. I think this all offsets the MPG. Plus if you want some peace and quiet you can go sit or lay in it. Thats free.
