Just a thought .
Surely the spark should jump from the live central core to the grounded gap cover (not the proper name but guess you know what I mean). When you take the gap end off the engine the spark jumps from the outer end of the gap to the engine block (Earth). Does this mean the outside of your plug is live? Is there a fault in the plug resulting in the outer, rather than inner core, becoming live?
Your back plug is performing ok so swap the leads and plugs over and see if the problem moves from front to back.
