Whs^^ thats what I meant by washing up liquid 'solution', you can also use a paintbrush to apply it if you don't have a spray bottle

I missed how old this Audi is...

Quite often, peeling lacquer and general corrosion can lead to older alloy wheels being ever so slightly porous - which allows the air to seep out through the metal of the wheel itself. A refurb will spray the whole wheel, and will seal it properly and for the long term.

The black goop is probably to try to stop a leak from a rough and corroded bead - the bit the tyre actually meets at the inside edge of the rim.

If it's a newish car, though, then it's probably a nail that you can't see.

Yeah the garage seemed to be of that opinion that it's due to the alloy becoming porous. It's a 2007 car, not massively old but it's done just short of 125,000 miles. I will put some washing up liquid on to see but think it's going to be a refurb job.
