Better earths would move the needle more than that.
Unless you live in the tropics there is no need for an 80*C stat. It will just cost you fuel.
The 87/88*C stat is specified for good reasons, it enables the engine oil to get hot enough to evaporate all of the corrosive condensate products and unburnt fuel that occur during warm-up.
Cold stat = longer on cold start/choke, accelerated engine wear and shorter oil change intervals.
If its genuinely overheating then you need a new radiator.

Took it for a short run down the motorway today ( 20 min total journey) and the 80 degree thermostat has indeed lowered the oil temperature, as I'd hoped, to approx 85 deg from 95 deg on the same run last week, this in turn has improved oil pressure so I'm happy with that.
time will tell what happens on a long run in the summer.

Oil at 95 Celcius is about right for part-throttle cruising. It should be 10 degrees above coolant temp as a rule, for the reasons I stated before. If the oil pressure has noticeably risen as a result, then it suggests that the engine has excessive bearing clearances i.e. it needs a re-shell and a new oil pump at the very least.
All T3 need an oil cooler imho.

Yes I know the engine is tired, as many of these wbx are, just buying some time and thinking of a hot 1000 mile trip in France in summer.
It's had a new pump and cover and pressure valva and spring, these have helped a bit but as you say needs the crank doing (which is why I bought your spare)

I would not run an 80 stat in winter, or if I only did short runs.

What do you base this statement on?
The choke is heated it takes 6 mins to open fully..whether there's a stat or not.
Engine wear accelerated..?
Oil change intervals...?
Having read and asked a few folks who have reduced oil temps down to 88 deg none of what you say made sense.
Perhaps your take is different, I'd like to read it.

I had my cooling system all flushed out last year and that is where my temp needle sits on a cool day. Though as soon as I start climbing a hill or in traffic then the needle starts to sit over the LED.
