I think elite is a roll of the dice these days

Make sure your new stat has a bleed hole in it, mine didn't and it caused all sorts of head scratching and needless replacing of parts if it doesn't it's easy enough to drill one. Without it mine refused to bleed properly and ran hot within minutes.

Still...strange that you are 'explicit' about the engine overheating yet unsure as to whether the electric fan is working? as the fan regulates upper temperature 'limits' its kind of important to know if it works.

Hi Martin,

some history:
The fan was running on a switch and worked fine, i had it put back to the therm switch which i got from BW and it worked fine also.

During the incident I was not listening out for the fan as had radio on and i was at panic stations to try and get temp down which i did when i flipped the heating controlls over and it went down.

Im pretty sure it was running and so i think the fan is fine.

You need to check.

It'll take two minutes to take the lower grille off, and jumper the connections to see if the fan itself is working.
Then get the van up to temp, with both upper and lower grilles off, and make sure the rad is hot to the touch ALL OVER, evenly.

I have a new Wahler 4155.87D thermostat from Brickwerks.

It did not come with a hole in it?

Does it need one and how/where do i do it?

No hole required
OE stats never had one your cooling system is designed to operate without one, the air bleed system on your cooling system should take care of air in the system, if it doesn't then your air bleeding abilities are compromised and should be investigated

fit it...but test it in hot water first

Thanks, I read the open temp but I don't have anything to monitor the water temp other then the kettle.

Is there a clever way of getting water to 87 degrees.

A saucepan?

Suspend the 'stat by a bit of wire from a skewer or spoon or something across the top of the pan.

You're not overly concerned about whether it opens at 87 versus 80 or 95 deg - so "a bit short of boiling" is good enough. What you ARE concerned about is whether it's opening and closing at all.
