Thanks for all the info.. I got the belt off and checked the pump and alternator this morning. There's the tiniest amount of play on the pump pulley but not much. Some white rust deposits all round the pump (a bit leaky maybe). Alternator seems fine.

Found the nut at the back of the hinge bolt (boy, do I feel dumb!)

Any way, got the belt a bit tighter and it seems fine now. No squeal.

What torque should I apply to the hinge bolt, adjuster bolt and swing arm? Couldn't find that in the Haynes, I guess it's alternator specific but not sure what make/model it is.

He He easy mistake
Pump span ok I take it, no crunchness?
M8 typical torque is 20 or 25 Nm which is not much.

I had a problem with a squealing alternator belt, and flickering alternator warning light.
tried several times to tighten the belt, but squeal returned.
replaced the brush pack on the alternator.
Light out and squeal gone.
Not quite sure why the brush pack should cause this, but definitely sorted now.

Cheers. Yep spins nice, no crunch. Just did a half hour drive with no squeal, no low oil pressure (at idle) and no temp warning lights. Almost a new P.B. :-)

If I'm not mistaken though I think it just lost a pint of glug through the rocker cover and sump plug. The plug should be 25nm right?

Yep sump plug 25Nm.
So many people don't use a torque wrench and that's bad for the thread becuse 25Nm is not as tight a you would do by hand.
Newton was a person so capitol N

The question is - would Newton have measured torque in lbft?
