I fitted one of these:
http://www.vwbusshop.de/epages/GuenzlCl ... iewProduct" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It screws straight into the sump plug hole. Then ran a cable to one of these:
http://www.vwbusshop.de/epages/GuenzlCl ... /333000034" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Works a charm and seems to correspond pretty accurately to what my coolant temp display reads.

Interesting
I saw that sump plug sensor and wondered if the hex on a WBX would be too large for the recess it sits in?
can you get a socket on that?
Normally WBX sump plugs have a reduced size hex to get the socket on.

Ooops, forgot to mention that! Yes you're absolutely right Itchyfeet, a regular socket won't quite fit. I use a box spanner which goes on fine.

how do you apply a torque wrench with a box spanner, or do you just guess torque?

I just guess the torque

always erring on the not-so-tight side! If it leaks, nip it up a bit more. In my experience after half a dozen or so oil changes it hasn't leaked yet.

Mine rattled out once, there are risks of being too loose or too tight.
thanks for the contribution to the post

Now you just need to find a place for the
Voltmeter, Ammeter, Air/Fuel Lambda gauge, Boost gauge, Vacuum gauge etc
