Thats a good start. I once (while driving a Beetle) felt the back act most weird. Pulled over (glad I was going slow at the time) and I might as well have been driving on oval wheels - the bolts had wound out by a good 1/4". That was after a garage had tightened them. Always check myself now to be sure.

I had the same on my T25 after a garage had fitted new tyres. I was on my way to a funeral when it happened

Handy though.

So what would you guys investigate next? Get someone to help me decide which quarter of the van the knocking is comming from and then take out that drive shaft and investigate thurther?

Yep, think so. If you end up investigating a brake drum though, make sure you have a new wheel cylinder handy. I never strip a drum now without having one to hand - sods law you find a weepy one. The retaining pins for brake shoes may well be corroded and that can cause a rubbing/grinding as the shoes can end up displaced. I think they're a tenner a set (thereabouts) from GSF.

Is it likely that the brake shoes will be worn right down?

You have to get those drums off to really know whats what.

I've done my driveshaft bolts very recently because they failed. Only one bolt appeared to have come loose and the rest then sheared. I would strongly recommend torquing them up. Mark the first one then do each one till you get back to it, or count them as you go,

If you strip and reassemble your cv joints; work out how the it assembles without the balls in, then rotate the outer cage and drop each ball in. Dont try and hammer the thing back together when you are mad at the haynes for making no sense!

I was told today that the knocking could well be related to the brake. However a friend has now told me he thinks the grinding is coming from the front near side. Will have the wheel off tomorrow to see if i can see anything.

If its front, could be worn pads, stuck caliper (common) or even a stone wedged somewhere. Wheel bearings just hum/rumble.

As far as i can hear there is no hum or rumble. I guess if i jack the wheel up and give it a spin id feel it rumble then if it was the wheel bearing? Would it be louder under braking?

It won't be wheel bearings. I just mentioned them because the noise is quite different. Very difficult to diagnose without knowing exactly where that noise is coming from.

Ok so today i have learnt 2 things. Went to a carpark with a friend and drove in circles for 10 minuites or so listning to each wheel in turn, unfortunately the knocking noise didnt become apparent until after i dropped him off and was driving home so unfortunately imnone the wiser. How ever what i did learn was:

1. The rubbing/grinding noise under braking, although more apparent while sat in the van is almost 100% (almost because its very faint when outside) comming from the nearside front wheel.

2. Driving in circles for 10 minutes makes you want to throw up. And driving in the other direction will NOT make this better!

Stuck/sticking brake caliper or worn pad/s - first thought. They been serviced lately?

No ... Iv been meaning to replace shoes and pads all around as the previous owner said they hadnt been touched for a while. So i decided now would be a perfect time to do it and have ordered the bits just a few mins ago. Hopefully leaving on the original front calipars but if they need to go they need to go and will put in another order for this. So hopefully next week ill be able to get on with it
