This sort of fault is why I have accumulated many spares when I have seen them at the right price.
I can always sell them, I see them as an investment.
If I had the fault after some basic tests I would start swapping bits to rule them out.
check your manufold heater is not connected to ignition 12v rather than the thermostat circuit.

just thought id update this, 2 years on, to hopefully help others who may have a similar problem. i've done a LOT of work on this van and its going to its new owner in the next few days, im pretty sure the problem has been sorted, just using it for a couple more days to be sure, so fingers crossed. Cant really see the theory behind it but turned out (hopefully) to be fuel tank. The tank was extremely rusty all over, tho wasn't leaking. For sometime now i have been changing every tank in each van i sell, ive heard all sorts of running issues being cured when new tanks have been fitted. But as i said i cant see the theory behind the problem can you?

My first van was a Fordson 1,100 cc sidevalve van/shooting brake with rod brakes and a wobbly body due to woodworm I was sixteen at the time and now am 75 - those were the days!.
This vehicle would occasionally fail to start while hot and the fix was to blow down the tank filler while it was cranked over - this clearly being a two person job with me the one with the big red mark round my mouth and getting light headed!

. If on my own pouring cold water over the carb also got it going again.
Clearly the fuel was vaporizing in the float chamber due to high temperature and the low pressure generated in order to draw up the fuel from the tank.
