I always keep water in my tank for brews & noodles at the beach. New panels before I bought it mean there was no external filler, so I fill it using a length of hose through the cap under the seat. I've never cleaned it out, tap water has enough chemicals in it to kill anything in there, and the water gets boiled or used for cooking so I don't worry about bugs.

As far as worrying about the weight, my van is always full of food, beer and out-doorsie toys, so stressing about an extra 25kg of water seems a bit pointless. Where would you draw the line? Only filling the tank up with 10 litres of petrol to increase the MPG?

Having a look at on board water tanks, do you guys drink the water straight from the tap after a steriliser tab or two in the tank, or do you run through a filter?

Sterilise the tank
fill it with water + puriclean
empty it
refill (as many times as you want, I do it once)
empty it
fill it
drink it

I do this once a year

I use Brewclens to clean and sterilise mine

Stole method from CAK tankkleen as is the same stuff

Dissolve 1 1/2 teaspoons in 1lt of warm water
Add to tank
Fill 90% with fresh water
Pump some through the system
10 min drive
Turn tap on for 5 mins
Drain what's left
Fill with fresh till over flows
Pump through tap for 5
Drain the rest

Use tank

I do drink it if have no bottled, but mainly use for brushing teeth and making tea.

Next question, waste water... I assume I should catch it, rather then let it escape directly into the ground?

Yes catch it and then empty it somewhere appropriate
Don't drive around with it

Having just fixed mine, I think it's great.
Agree with all cleaning advice, as for extra weight, I only fill up when bush camping or going to festivals.
If I'm going to a campsite and its a long way will drain the tank and fill up when I get there.
Space always seems to be at a premium for me so less things to trip over, knock over or spill is a bonus

I have a pure water in line filter I got it from the 12V shop. They are not cheap around £150 and the filters are £50 a pop which you have to replace every 18 months afterwards, if you are using it a lot.

You get clean drinkable water it tastes like minerial water it's that good!
