There is one about 20 miles away from me. How do I test it to know for sure its Diodes?

with the ign light on and the brush pack changed you have already tested it.
you'll get confirmation at the repair shop one way or another

I am 99% certain you can drive it like that. It ain't going to suddenly chuck 48 Volts around your wiring or owt like that. The worst I can see happening is at some point it will fail and then just stop charging.

Yep, it wouldn't be too long before battery flattens - minutes if you had your light on. :)
