Probably a fault in the blue wire somewhere. I am sure this subject been discussed on here. Can anyone give me a link to how to check the alternator wiring.

definitely the blue wire has a faulty connector or broken wire somewhere - mine was snapped just at the connector beside the battery
check all the connectors for oxidation and follow the wire

If you place the earth clamp of the welder close to the area your welding and ensure its a good earth it will reduce the risk as covboy said the current will flow in the shortest route.

If you pick a bad earth problems can arise, one car I had in for repair had the exhaust welded, they placed the earth clamp on the body, as the exhaust has rubber mounts the current flowed through the ecu, o2 sensor etc and took quite a few parts out.

You can also get spike protectors when welding too.

Ihave a surge protector that I use when welding, clips across the battery terminal, never had any problems, and it save loosing any radio codes and such like.earth clamp as close to weld as possible, which is best practise as it give a better weld!

I believe that persons witha Heart Pacemaker should bnot use an electrical welder.
