Hi Kev, I have exactly your issue as quoted above. Do you know the cause? Slow or no crank then suddenly takes hold. Subsequent starts straight after are fine and dandy.

I've got exactly the same, too. My suspicion, no more, is that it's the bush. I've got one here ready, just short on circular tuits.

Looking on another thread I think you might be right. Any good tutorials out there?

Nah, you just have to fight getting the old one out. Oh, and ALWAYS stuff a rag in just below the bush or it can easily fall into the abyss....

oilite bush comes out quite easily you just have to be brave, if you have a 2.1dj with injectors that is. the m12 tap is a must as is the rag stuffed in, turn the tap right home if you don't it will come out in bits, set the nut on the long bolt that holds the starter in position to the depth of the oilite bush and place the bush on the nut, this then lets you locate bush in position and you can tap the end of the bolt until the nut hits the bell housing leaving the bush in place and flush. soak the bush over night in oil or you can rub oil into it, I also smeared oil into the hole where the bush fits. I did this from the engine bay so it would be a bit more of a job on your back, when you've the starter off it would be an idea to change the brushes. if you have a look in electrical there is a link to buying them in the rebuilding a starter motor thread

Thanks Mark!! I'm going to dive in Monday and have a go once I've got a m12 tap.

An update if anyone is interested. Replaced oilite bush, added new spade connector to solenoid and new earth strap from gearbox to chassis and touch wood everything seems to be working grand now fingers crossed.
