CVs

When one of my CVs started knocking I replaced the lot.
I was led to believe that the thing that makes them knock is when the cage is worn and allows the balls to get out of line. This then allows them to jam in the grooves. They then jump back into some sort of position and this produces the knocking.
Certainly I could not see much wear on the ones I took off and there was no rotary slack in any of them!
With the standard springs they work at quite an angle. (Syncros!!?) When I put on lower springs the van seemed to move off smoother, or was I just dreaming?
