looking at the pics of the two systems I think mine is digifant as the digijet has the idle stabiliser like old golfs or pornch 924. & surprisingly cause I do car fiddle like the ones found on Nissan s12's
mine has this type like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IDLE-STABILIS ... 54075f9265" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
mine is a german import not uk vehicle, a loverly left hooker

Could be idle control valve? Maybe give it a clean or a quick adjust to run slightly higher rpm. Fixed a similar issue on my old van.

Ok so lambda = MV or SS engine code Digifant which is all in the Bentley manual, which you obviously have

as it's the one with all the syncro stuff in
IF you are a full member on 80-90 then Oldiebutgoodie can point you at the link for it from members only - it's available as a big paperback book from Brickie, JK, Amazon etc.. occasionally come along in for sale preloved and pdfs of it are in circulation
every syncro owner should have a copy even if you run a non original engine or TD, westie vanagon furniture is in there and most of the important bits about bodywork and trim and the electrics are pretty well covered

OIdle speed is large flat screw head on top of the throttle body.
Mine had a wavering idle \ surge once hot. Turns out mine was set too open = too high rpm. I dont have a rev counter either, but do have a multi Meter that can do rpm from a spark lead...
Check idle cold and hot?
E D I T: mines a DJ BTW. .

I have a good few bits that I've collected over the years if you're stuck for something... Also about to remove my DJ for a TDI ... So I'll have everything you could need

Its worth checking that your airflow meter is working as it should, as this can cause sporadic and intermittent running, and is temp sensitive a little bit.
I made this video years ago when getting to grips with the digijet system on my 2.1 I was just trying to understand how all the digijett bits works. The airflow meter is the same on a DJ as on an MV like yours. As the airflow meter flap opens up the meter increases its voltage, which is read by by the ECU and the correct mixture is given.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Tn8dyzn9a4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You have to prize off the black lid on the airflow meter, and the test checks that the electrical tracks on the airflow meter are in good shape, they are a wear item, and the tracks do disintegrate over time.
I should note that what you are looking for with the meter test is a smooth increase in voltage as the airflow flap opens. You can do this test without the engine running but the ignition switched on. It only takes 5 minutes to do. A mechanical meter is handy.
Good luck, it is likely something simple.

right narrowed some issues down, fixed bits n bobs, not changed the fuel filter yet but the main issue I have having is
its cutting out at junctions or when you roll into a junction depress the clutch & the engine dies, it also sometimes only runs on 3 cylinders when cold but 4 when warm
I think its ignition related so gonna change the usual suspects & fuel filter, it defo needs a tune up which I intend to go through it next week, I'm meant to be going away in it the 1st week of july to devon but the way its running I don't trust it....
once warm cold it wont idle at all, it just cuts out, checked compressions on all cylinders & they are fine, not using oil/water or blowing smoke at all, no knocks/bangs or rattle from the motor
any ideas folks?

I've had similar symptoms with a 2.1 engine. Searched for a long time, replaced components and sensors, with no succes. Eventually it turned out to be corrosion under the m6 screw on the left cylinder head that holds the ground wire for the ignition among others. This was NOT visible from the outside. The bolt even snapped off when loosening, underneath was badly corroded. Cleaned the round connectors and put a new bolt in the m6 thread right next to it on the head: Problem solved. Almost too simple could not believe this was causing it after all I went through.
Also check the ignition distibutor itself. It has a electrical connector on the outside. From that connector three very thin wires go inside and connect to the hall sender inside. Check these tiny cables for wear and/or chafing. The hall sender can be replaced separately.

If you check the timing it's a different procedure to the dj , you probably know that already !!
