I would also sugest you check the brake servo and vacume hoses for leaks.
Although that may also give other symptoms with engine idleing
Mine is able to stop very well when needed.

Off topic, I have a recurring dream / mild nightmare about driving around with almost non existent brakes. Not an emergency stop, just normal driving around pressing as hard as I can on the pedal and virtually nothing happening. It happened again last night I wonder what it might mean

I've also fitted the bmw servo ( makes a massive difference) fitted 313mm vented front discs(small difference) but my brakes were perfectly fine before I started. I Just thought it would be a sensible mod given the engine I have! Like others have said check servo/hose first. to check this, put your foot hard on the pedal when stopped, engine off(when its been off for a while helps) then start the engine you should feel the pedal go down some more as the servo comes into action. If not then check hose from inlet manifold to servo.

Oh yes and the servo to use is one from a 80's 3 series, E35 I think.its 10" in diameter instead of the stock 9" both made by ATE. You just need to mod the pushrod,use the old one out of your old servo and tap the hole out in the bmw one to match. you'll see what I mean when you get one.

After a quick look on that well known auction site the e30 servo looks right too, and maybe the e36 as well.

I paid £700 for all new discs, front and back, new pads, break lines fitted at a place in Penkridge. I have very good breaking power now nearly up to modern standards. This was my first job on the camper as i carry to children under 5. Safety was top priority !

Wonder how well this guy stopped.

Nice! another good use for garden hose!!

Might be alright to get you home (possibly) but nowhere near thick enough for servo vac hose.
