Even when it's modified to extend over the engine it won't need building up. I really wanted to avoid this as I always want to have easy access to the engine compartment.

Would concur with that. I always though the "build it up and bung in a drawer" and "No I planned it that way" is a bit of a bodge and can leave rear passenger legs dangling if the seat is too high. You have a nice strong seat there and you can always keep modding it until its right. The joys of DIY interiors.
