Was going to say do it yourself then I noticed your username!

With a van full of kids... last thing I want to do is mess about with gas and fumes. Not sure why my user names has got to do with it though. .. unless you've heard about us.

You will get far more fumes from boiling your kettle on the gas!

turn the fridge upside down for a night and then try it.
With lack of use, the refrigerant needs to be mixed up, and the upside down trick usually works.

gas fridges take about an hour to get cold

Sounds like his is working otherwise on electric so turning upside down would be pointless in that case. Just get that impression that his is ok from his question.

The thing I get nervous about with running the fridge off gas is leaving the van for a few hours - is it OK to leave the gas on and leave it running?

Yes, I leave mine on all the time when I'm camping, even overnight (with sufficient ventilation).

We do that too. Quite safe in well ventilated conditions, i.e dont leave-in my vans case-the louvre windows open that are above the fridge exhaust, particularly at night.
Best bet is to have a carbon monoxide alarm in the van to warn you if you are in the least worried though.

If a 3 way fridge is fitted professionally there are no fumes inside the van as it is vented to the outdoors. Like many people on here with kids, I usually switch it off at night anyway!

Ours works well enough, but if anything it is too small for longer periods of camping, so we usually also have a cheap, noisy electric cool box as well, unplugged at night. That uses about 40watts so will run for a few hours on the leisure battery, and I have an adapter to plug into mains on hookup.

All converters of campervans fitted gas fridges.
No one has EVER EVER died because of it.
They would not be fitted if gas fridges were remotely dangerous.
By all means have it checked and cleaned.. but be assured gas fridges are not killers....

The stove is far more dangerous.

It's very much horses for courses, I've a Waco compressor and it's great, it easily lasts 2 or 3 days of engine off loch side wild camping before I need to start Betsy up to charge the battery's.

I went for it after reading all the syncro adventures and not wanting to cut holes in the side of my van.

Pay your money n take your choice.

the flue on my old vans fridge had rotted through, didn't notice until around 6 months of ownership... Had the fridge running all the time, so basically it was flue'ing into the van while we were all asleep.
It's such a tiny flame, basically a pilot light.. Almost impossible to poison yourself...

I would say in a draughty old T25...utterly impossible

Seriously? Who switches the fridge off at night ? Utter rubbish.... Bit like those that switch everything off at the mains before going to bed.... Darkness don't make thing more likely to kill you, and daylight won't save you!
