I wouldn't split them until you have checked them for continuity as I said - if you have voltage on one cell work your way along the series until you find a dead point either way. Check to see if the joining strip has come adrift first. If you have to replace one cell make sure that you cut the joining strip in the middle so that you have something to solder onto.
One dead one will kill the lot as nothing can flow through the series.

Correct, you need to identify the dead cell with your meter. If you try to do the above with a pack you can easily make matters worse as it can cause one or more cells to actually charge up with the incorrect polarity (yes NiCads can do that ).
