if it drives better on petrol then points to air leaks
The van is now off road in a broken down state at work after my 25mph max on 50 roads much to the annoyance of the locals. I cannot get it to idle now. Something is dramatically wrong now.
Did you watch the you tube video I posted above?

If the vehicle is now a non runner at your place of work, do you not have breakdown cover?
Mr AA/RAC/GreenFlag/Whoever is better placed to diagnose the fault than we are at a distance.

Yes we are with RAC and I really don't want to call them out as we can only claim 2 breakdowns per year apparently and we have already had a massive claim getting the van back from the middle of France earlier in the year!

remote diagnosis is difficult
A trained eye at the scene might be of help here

I understand what your saying. Does anyone live in the Hope Valley/ Peak district area? I've not been living here long so don't know many people. I would really appreciate the help in exchange for some beer money
I'll give RAC a call and see what they say.

Apparently I can make 5 call outs per year so I will call them out tomorrow and let you know.
Thanks Rob

Started it again today and managed to get it to idle but it was really shaking the van and so I turned it off. I went round to the engine and felt the exhaust down pipes and only 2 on each side were hot! The other 2 were stone cold!
I also fitted the old dizzy cap and rotor arm and this made no difference.
What does this mean?

firing order is 1-4-3-2
are your leads on right?
two cold headers mean you have a misfire

Leads are ok. Failed coil?

Check coil and ignition amplifier ( start by checking and cleaning the connections)
Make sure engine has oil in it.
Did you say its on gas ? Is your vapaorizor working ?

Have you swapped the leads with a known good one to eliminate those ?
Are the leads on the correct plugs ? 10 o'clock to gearbox left 8 o'clock to header tank left 2 o'clock to alternator right etc
Are the plugs 'new' ?
What gap are they set at ?
Have you tried swapping them for known good ones ?
Why would the coil only fail on one side ?

find out if you have a spark at the cold headers
if you do..this is a fuel issue

Do you mean two on one side or one on each side
I can't see how it can be two on each side as there are only 2 per side
Which number cylinders are cold it may help to know

Looking at this drawing mine looks like its been rotated to the right??
The cylinders that are firing are 1 and 4

Your distributor cap is on wrong.
Which is making the plug leads go to the wrong plug.
Unclip it, turn it left, anti clockwise, and try again.
Have you had a problem and trying to correct it, taken off the distributor cap and put it back on the wrong way round ?
What i'm getting at is that if the distributor cap has ALWAYS been like that, it wouldnt explain the sudden onset of the problem.
But, if the problem came, and then you changed the cap trying to fix the problem, you may have made it worse until you change it back again.
