That engine had had it front pulley drop off...the 4 Allen bolts had broken due to being loose but engine was till a runner...but a bit of a unknown...I drained the oil and heard a clunk inside when moving the engine...removed the sump and found a main bearing cap layin on the sump! It was almost unmarked and would likely be ok but didn't want to risk it...bolts had broken due to vibration from the wobbling pulley by all accounts...crazy but true...never ceases to amaze me how engines can go wrong and the last thing expected was a main cap ligging in the sump..!

Poulton-le-fylde, near Blackpool. I run a little mot station/workshop on Poulton industrial estate and I'm usually playing with a project at evenings and weekends. Just shout if you need anything.

It is nice and clean in there yep...but the guy who owned it is a Porsche engine and gearbox expert, and and ex Audi parts man so I expect the oil has been good stuff over its years...it's cleaner than my Afn internals for sure..

this looks great. One thing I wonder about the JX oil pump is whether the teeth are the same as the AFN pump - I used the JX one on mine and had some high (reported) oil pressures, but it was a cheap electrical gauge. I reckon this is a question for syncroandy and max and caddy, but I wondered whether it might be best to use the intended pump with the JX pickup if possible. The other thing is the pressure relief valve is in the pickup itself - is this set to the same on the tdi and the JX? If so I'd be wanting to keep the tdi one. I used to see well over 7 bar, and I think I read that the tdi pressure relief is set to 7.2 bar (can't confirm that at the mo). Would be good to know the experts' opinions on that.

The other thing I mentioned to you is the use of a lift pump - I used one when I went up to bigger nozzles and it did noticeably help at high revs in 5th. The IP has to pull a lot of fuel through then, and so if you can reduce the pressure differential and the pump can grab more fuel... well that's what I believe - you're the expert on pipes, pressures and flow rates

Looking forward to seeing this thread - hope it goes really well for you. Are you not thinking about an upright install while you've got it all out? (I probably shouldn't have said that)

upright install, hmm...... i've invested a bit too much in my engine mounts to change now, maybe the next van..... Lift pumps definitely seem to work for the people who fit them, but they do seem to be running bigger turbo's and maps that move the max power up the rev range. Would be interested to see the gains in bhp on a van with just bigger injectors..

The New oil filter housing turned up today. Somehow i have now ended up with four of these?!

I removed the AHU type screw in pressure valve and fitted the AFN restrictor. Really have no idea if it makes any difference? The one fitted to my engine at the moment is the AHU type.. Took the opportunity to take a couple pics of them side by side, AFN valve is on the left in each picture apart from 2nd pic where its on the right

Also just won four new in sealed bags VW glowplugs for £15, so a bit of a bargain there!
