I think that you are over complicating it.
if you were discussing a Rolls Royce trent engine costing twenty million pounds, I could understand it, but we are talking about a simple piece of engineering that ,in your words, doesn`t get a lot of use.

why don't you stick some Morrises 15/40 in every ten thousand miles and hope for the best

Service interval is 6,000 ... but I change our's by ear, which on lpg is between 3,000-4,000 miles with a Mann filter every 2nd change. Running on gas the oil doesn't have the carbon deposits to block the filter.

Oil is cheap, engines less so.

davidm wrote:Another question Martin,
How come the recommended service change is (6k miles or) 6 months if that comes first, presumably irrespective of the mileage possibly being very low in that time?

Hmmm not sure that VW ever stipulated 6 months if that came first?

Again, much of the service jargon is/was written to ensure Volkswagen owners use Volkswagen dealerships on a regular basis. They certainly wouldn't want Grandma 'Mabel' who uses her car to go the shop on Friday's, only servicing it every 5 years!

I do about 4000 miles a year in mine in all conditions and change the oil and filter every year. just budget £20 a year and keep an eye open for euro car parts offers, from time to time they offer a gallon of oil, free filter and free delivery. I paid £12 for the last oil and filter change

Sorry to add another question. I have a petrol 1.9 watercooled and i was going to change the oil using Comma 15w40 mineral oil as it was cheap. Now it's come it says it's suitable for Petrol and diesel. I have read on the wiki that some people do run diesel oils in T25's as the detergents may be of some use. Has anyone any thoughts on using this oil? I have formed the view that if it's suitable for both, then the detergents present will only be mild. what do others think :?

Yep, mineral is used in both d****l and petrol engines.

Thanks Ian :)

I'll rephrase the question, is it ok to use Comma 15w40 Mineral oil in my petrol T25, as it says it is for both Diesel and Petrol on the bottle?

That should be absolutely fine, keep an ear out after 4,000 miles or so and if you hear it becoming more tappety in a morning then it's oil change time, running just on petrol it should be fine up to 6,000 miles with a filter change as well.

It's actually a rarity for any oil nowadays NOT to say 'suitable for BOTH petrol and diesel engines'.

The difference being....an oil primarily designed for petrol engines but ALSO suitable for diesel engines or VISAVERSA (designed for diesel but also suitable for petrol engines)....

Either way no harm is going to be done but as a recommendation, stick with an oil that was PRIMARILIY designed for your engine type as there are subtle differences in formulation.

Not being funny here ;
How do you "change oil by ear " Ian ?
Does the engine just get noisier on the tappets when its due a change or what ?

Not telling anybody what they should do, just showing what VW put in the instruction manual.
