Simple test Keith, disconnect the positive from the leisure battery and keep it away from any metal work then start engine up again then replace fuse in relay and see if engine revs up drop then?

John, I think I'm correct here; If I charge the battery off the van and then after a while I am back to square one that will prove that the leisure battery is the cause. Yes?
As for the digression: No problem, I'm totally confused over it all but I'm working on it

Yes (providing you know for sure that nothing is draining the battery whilst the van is standing unused of course)

Hang on, we will confuse you more if you want!
If you follow what Ghost said about charging it up off the vehicle and leaving it , checking that it holds the voltage that would be the best test of the battery. Seeing what it does whilst on the van brings confusing variables like what charge is going into it. Ghost's simple way will give you an indication as to whether it is the battery or the van's wiring/charging at fault.

I was just thinking that if the fuse blows or gets very warm (as the 20 amp did) when I have the battery in a fully charged state then I'll know its not the battery, seeing as the problems seem to have a connection with the flat battery. Another thought. I could get some charge in it then get it checked at the garage (my sons.. no charge- as in no £'s). Don't really want to bother him though 'cos I know he's up to the eyeballs in work.

Charged the battery up using a mains battery charger. Went for a good drive and used lights, water pump etc. All is well and the fuse is not getting warm. Loks like the alternator was being worked hard.I will now have the battery tested and if it's kaput I'll buy a new one (out of the pension pot ).
Hope this helps someone else in a similar position to work out what their fault is. Thanks for your help folks.
