Sounds like you've caught a touch of 'syncrofever'
Be warned, it's very contagious and there is no cure known to man
It's a sneaky little virus that slowly munches away at your bank account !!!

Tdi 110 or Subaru 2.5 you won't be disappointed with either.

good 2.1 is a nice motor in a syncro, mine was 2.1 16" when i had it, fuel consumption is the stinger, most petrol users seem to favour gas but if you plan on campering the van it`ll eat in to your storage space, ok if its just you and the other 1/2 but family camping you just run out of space.
converting from petrol to diesel is a big bind and will cost loads. i did it. i think tom did it too.
so that leaves the 1600td, good little engine in my empty van and great economy. " more than my tdi gets" but load it up and it starts to struggle. easier to upgrade to tdi either electronic or with mtdi pump, i`ve run both, and engines are available cheap so if you do loose the engine on a diesel powered syncro its arguably cheaper to get a reliable engine back in the van, quickly.
if i was to do it over again i`d buy a good one already done because it will work out cheaper, as mentioned earlier "e" tdi conversion is now best part of 4k add 1k if going from petrol, gear box for tdi will be 1k-1.5k " speek to Aidan talbot " to get the best out of the engine.

I say this from first hand knowledge, power, torque 32/33 mpg, not that I'm biased with 2 eTdi's for sale right now
Ask Lee, Tom, Jed and a few others on here
Cheers Rich
I would be interested in the panel van, but as its on eBay I can't get to see it before the auction ends as I'm away for the next 10 days.

Loads of views and watcher's, but no offers yet, so it will probably get relisted. Your welcome to have a drive anytime, but........................................
I assure you that it will make your syncrofever worse

I can live with that.

Mine's a 2.1 petrol, running most of the time on LPG. I just went through a huge amount of research into engine options (see other threads elsewhere on this forum). I considered Subaru, Golf GTI, Audi 5, Audi V6, and various Diesels including TD and TDI *(both 1.9 and 2.5 5-cyl). In the end, after much deliberation I've decided to stick with the 2.1 DJ and am just waituing for it to be returned with a slightly uprated wasserboxer engine and the LPG system uprated to closed loop.
The 2.1 wasserboxer is a lovely engine. Sounds good, and had characteristics that suit the van. Not the most powerful or torquey but if that's important, better buy a more modern van!
Subaru conversion; Nice engines and a logical upgrade but expensive - doubts about valve seats and LPG too!
Golf GTi conversion (and also the Audi 5): not enough advantage over the wasserboxer and the engine doesn't fit the engine bay as 'nicely' as the wasserboxer.
Audi V6: Nice but doesn't fit easily and is really more power than you need.
Diesels: (I should say I have a SEAT Ibiza TDI, which is excellent, so I'm not anti-Diesel BUT..) Diesels are not at all like the wasserboxer. They have great torque but are an 'industrial' engine - nothing like as smooth. Lesser ones like the AAZ are inferior to an LPG wasserboxer in every way and the TDI -engined vans I've experienced are pretty unimpressive really, unless you want to go serious off-roading. Because of transmision limitations they are nowhere near as good as the Wasserboxer on the motorway (don't expect a TDI-engined Type 25 to perform like a TDI engined T5!).
Enough. I've made my decision and am looking forward to many more wasserboxer powered years..

Lots of good info, thanks.
Can you tell me more about a Wasserboxer? What's involved?

Brilliant, I'd love to! I'll be there for one of the days (in my T4). When are you going to be there?
