As far as your other question is concerned, it's supposed to be straight, as shown in my last photo and the link above. Is yours bent? It would take quite a bit of effort to bend it. BTW, what year is your van?

As for the 'box plate' I agree with you.. countersunk plastic (for cs rivets) or similar..

Hi guys,

We spent a bit of time under the van today to pin down the nasty skretching noise when selecting gears.

These's a supporting flange for the rod, right above the fuel tank.
I'm unable to get to it (it's out of reach) but I can see the grommet for the rod as completely broken down and has dropped on to the top of the tank, leaving nothing to keep for the rob centralised in the flange hole.

Any one know what I'm talking about if so is the grommet still available?

I'll post a photo or video shortly.

Errrm... Am I missing something here? About a week ago, starting with my first reply to your original question, I gave you several very detailed answers (with pictures, part numbers and my understanding of availability). We even clarified things in several PMs. Now you're asking if anyone knows what you're talking about, and if the grommet is available.

If you look back through this thread that you started, you should find all the answers to the questions you just asked. I'll highlight the bits I'm talking about.

I'm 99% sure that the rear selector rod didn't have any plastic sliders, just this three-dimensional steel assembly. Those parts that you linked to are for repairing the end of the front gear linkage rod where it is bolted to the base of the gearstick, on later models than ours. My front linkage just has one plastic piece on the right-hand side, where it rubs against the reverse stop, and no evidence of anything on the left. The left-hand side rubs against the plastic slider on the protection box, that we are trying to work out how to re-fabricate.

What I have found, as I think I mentioned, is that the selector on the side of the gearbox, against which this rear rod mechanism rubs, can (and does) wear along the sides of the plastic balls. I was trying to think of a way to repair this worn ball, to take out some of the side-to-side slack. On mine, only the top ball is worn on the sides, and the rest of the selector is perfect. As replacements are over £40, I thought it would be worth trying to repair it somehow. I'll keep you posted.

At the time of originally reading your response I hadn't/couldn't visulise what was in above the tank.

Now that I have re-read your post it all makes sense, thank you for the information.
As per my last post the unavailable grommet has completely gone

Now looking for a substitute.

You will, though, need to drop the tank to get at these bushes. That probably won't be a bad thing, because you'll probably find that your breather hoses are knackered and need replacing anyway.

I might be dropping the tank next week end.. if only to replace the plastic sleeve.. prepare and paint..

leaving the more expensive, but accessible bits till later..

Do you happen to have a photo of the centre guide bush? The one that you said you have to remove the fuel tank to get to?

Brickwerks sell them. If you are going to remove your petrol tank , have a look at the main hand brake cable/rod. You can only replace that with the tank out.

Yea I know they sell them, have the link on my other thread. Just wanted to see where it actually went. If any one had a photo with the tank removed.

Get under your van and have a look. Not done it myself but if you remove the big heater pipe that goes on top of tank, the bush in the bracket thats welded to the underside of the floor may be accessible.
