Hi,

I went down the same route as you (a cheapo 2nd hand unit for £350).

I checked comprssion (good) and saw it running (good) saw it revving (good) and saw no smoke (also good).

However, when I ran it up to temperature in my van I found it had poor oil pressure (oil light on) and it smokes like the marloborough man.

Having said that, Its doing as a runner whilst I rebuild my old one, which was knackered. Having been through the same process I'd second your choice, plus you have the fun of a rebuild, which is what I'm up to now.

If you've not fitted one of these before I'd reccommned an engine crane, makes it a one man task. Also, if you get a bit of wood (2" by 3") and wedge it so it goes into the training arms and under the gearbox, you can lower the box onto it and itr sits at the right angle to pop the engine back onto later... Top tip from the wiki!

Good luck,

Alex

Elite VW couldn't do anything for 3 weeks.

I gave the eBay guy a call and he said he wants £500 or he's going to break it for parts.

I'm happy with that, as long as its ok when I see it.

Picking up tomorrow, and then straight to the mech who's giving its proper once over before instal.

Done all I can, and this is our last hope to get it to France.

The heartache involved has been unbelievable. But I hope worth it once the kids het to go away in it finally!

I Hope it all goes well. We are in the same boat in regards trying to get the vehicle sorted and take the Kids to France. They have been geed up all year.So the current problems with the van becomes more than just a mechanical fault

I've been trawling the net for days, and turnkey CU engines seem to be thin on the ground. Gumtree, Google, Forums, nothing!

It of course needs to be an exact match of the current engine, and apparently they didn't make them for many years?

I honestly thought they'd be easy to come by.

I even considered the really expensive stuff, but even they don't seem to be in stock anywhere when you start enquiring. Most places recondition on request it would seem.

I'm lucky I found that one on eBay a few days ago.

I'll keep an eye out for you as I know what you're going through. I haven't slept well for days!

Ive had no problems getting mine done, same engine! Just varying prices, plenty of places willing to do the work and quickly!!! Not sure why you are having difficulties?

Just grabbed the Camper & Bus mag & listed a few places below that do engines although you may have already tried them:

The Engine Shop (Erith, Kent) - 01322-350032
The VW Engine Company (Deptford, SE8) - 0208 692 3326
VW Camper Co (Oxford) - 01295 812266
May also be worth giving Olly a call at T25 Direct - (Dulwich, SE22) - 0208 299 3565

May also be worth posting up a Wanted advert here and on Brickyard/Volkszone.

As a real real last resort would it be worth having a look at maybe hiring a T25 for your trip?

Got the engine.

Guy has loads of bays, beetles, transporters, and a split in his back yard.

So... He knows his stuff.

Enigne came out of a bay, and he refitted a 1.6.

He started it on the floor with an bell housing and starter. Sounded good, and no smoke.

Hoisted it in the back of my X5, and off it went to my guy.

He looked it over, lots of new bits on it, no pods, one carb with a bodge repair in it. Not a problem as mine have been reconned so straight swap.

Doing the clutch at he same time too.

Paid £500 for it, and am happy as it all going in Tuesday. Fingers crossed it passes the MOT.

Lets hope I've rolled a six!!!

So is the engine out of a Bay then? If so it shouldn't go into a t25, it would go in with allot of work. Not a straight swap, its a totally different engine.

Not true Toby.

Late bays and early Aircooled t3 motors are near identical. Its still a type4 pancake motor not an upright type 1 engine.

The engine was a T25 CU that had been shoved in a bay.

It didn't fit properly, for reasons I'm sure some on here know better then me. That's why this guy had it as he removed it and refitted a proper 1.6 back in the bay. Also why he had no use for it, as he doesn't deal with T25s much as there's not enough money in them for him.

There was certainly evidence of rubbing on the exhaust.

It's originally out of a T25 westie apparently.

I stand corrected. I thought the air-cooled 2.0l was 1979- onwards
