because VW fitted the best all round carb from the beginning
If, however, they fitted delorto carbs... I would be in utopia.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

I spoke to a very helpful man at Bromyard today and talked it all through with him. My plan is to wait until the end of the summer (need the van for a couple of festivals in August) then send the carb to them to be reconditioned.

Once it's back from Bromyard, Coast VW will set it up in my engine.

Can't wait to get it done, to be honest. I'm intrigued to see how much difference it will make - I've got a feeling that I've never yet had the pleasure of driving the van with a properly functioning carb.

Ok it'll be different but not awesome.
make sure everything that attaches to it is in good order
and that there are no air leaks, fuel leaks.
brake servo hose
distributor diaphragm
vac lines
power lines

Spitting should still be illegal, it used to be 'cause it spread tuberculosis, have to say i'm happy with my weber on the camper and the twin Dells on the buggy( modded DG) although the dells do cough back despite being set up on a rolling road (but it is fun). The reason that the most respected place on 'here' will only rebuild and refit is because the refitting is just as important and they do not want their hard won reputation to be damaged by people refitting badly and then complaining.

Finally got the van booked in for it's carb reconditioning. Off to Coast VW w/c 27th Jan for them to take the carb out and send it off the Bromyard. Hopefully back on the road by mid-Feb, ready for an incident free Spring & Summer of dubbing (....wishful thinking?!)

So we now have the van back with us with a newly reconditioned carburettor thanks to Bromyard (and removed/ refitted by Coast VW). I have to say it has made a big difference, especially in 2nd gear which I had no idea could be so smooth...it used to 'chug' a bit in 2nd and I was always keen to get up to 3rd, but now it's smooth and controlled in 2nd, which makes driving in heavy traffic and up hills much more enjoyable.

The idle revving seems much more consistent too. Time will tell whether its also sorted my sporadic stalling fits, here's hoping!

Just like to butt in with another vote for Bromyard, just had my pierburg rebuilt and the van is reborn.
No more stalling, lumpy running or lack of power, despite UPS smashing it up on the way to him, and dry tapits frightening the life out of me when I first started it. Dave.

So, after two and a bit years of trouble free motoring, my pre-carb refurb issue has reared it's ugly head again.

Intermittently, the van runs lumpy (hesitant acceleration and loss of power) before stalling every time it idles. Just like it did before the carb was refurbed.

Coast VW have adjusted the timing last month, that sorted it for a few weeks, but the same things happening again today. Had 200+ trouble free miles in Wales over the weekend, then it happened today on my 3 mile journey home from work :roll:

Been doing more research online - lots of people suggesting that water in the fuel can cause these issues. Any likelihood of that being my problem? Wynns Dry Fueld stuff has been recommended to sort it (http://www.wynns.uk.com/Product.aspx?p= ... ONS_DIESEL" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), anyone got experience of this stuff?

If it is water in the fuel, I guess that indicates a bigger problem. Could my tank be on it's way out?

Clutching at straws a bit here. Thought the carb refurb had sorted it and can't go through that much expense again.

Sounds like crap/water in the carb. Crap in the idle jet?

Makes you wonder if the previous carb was knackered?

Are you knowledgeable enough to dismantle the carb and clean it out?

If it was Bromyard would not have sent it back

I would call Bromyard and ask them for an opinion
